1. After implantation, finger-like projections appear on the trophoblast called chorionic villi which are surrounded by the uterine tissue and maternal blood. 2. The chorionic villi and uterine tissue become interdigitated with each other and jointly form a structural and functional unit between developing embryo (foetus) and maternal body called placenta. By regarding both 1 and 2, we can say that:
▪The Villi which are formed by the breakdown of some endometrial lining in the region embryonic pole which absorb nourishment and divide themselves to form chronic villi.
▪The Villi penetrate endometrium for fixation and absorption of nourishment. By which the attachment of young embryo or blastocyst to endometrium of uterus is called implantation. It requires 3-4 days and is completed at 9-10th day of fertilisation.
