Let the pages he read for the first day be x.
On the second day he read x/2 pages.
Similarly, on the third day he read, (x/2)/2 pages, that is, x/4
And on the third day he read x/8 pages.
So the equation becomes,
x+x/2+x/4+x/8 = 300
implies 8x/8 + 4x/8 + 2x /8 + x/8 = 300
implies 15x = 2400
implies x = 160.
So he read 160 pages on the first day.
