Sol:
Principal = 12000Rs
Rate = 8%,
Time = 1 year

SI = P x T x R/100 = (12000 x 8 x 1) / 100 = Rs 960

Rs 960 is the amount given as scholarship.

Let the amount of highest scholarship be Rs x

So the scholarships will be x-300, x -600, x -900, x -1200

⇒ x +(x -300) + (x-600 ) +(x-900) + (x-1200) = 960

⇒ 5x - 3000 = 960

⇒ 5x = 3960

x = 3960/5 = Rs 792

So the highest scholarship is Rs 792

∴ Preceding scholarships are 792 - 300 = 492, 792 - 600 = 192

So, the number of students who get the scholarship is only 3 as the other scholarship amounts are negative according to the given data in the question.
