Anne called her diary the nicest present she had received on her thirteen birthday. This was because she had no 'true' friend to talk to. She had many friends and her family to talk to but she couldn't bring herself but tell them about simple, trivial, ordinary things. She wants to open up and talk about her feelings more openly without feeling like a burden to others. She considered her diary as her true friend as she could go on and on about her ruminations and the diary would not judge her nor tell her to stop. It would remain silent and patiently listen to her and thus Anne felt comfortable.
