1. Answer the following questions briefly :-

(a) What are the three components of a map?

Answer) There are three Components of Maps – distance, direction and symbol.

(b) What are the four cardinal directions?

Answer) The four cardinal directions are north, east, south, and west. Northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest are known as the intermediate directions.

(c) What do you mean by the term 'the scale of the map'?

Answer) Map scale refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground.

For example, on a 1:100000 scale map, 1cm on the map equals 1km on the ground.

(d) How are maps more helpful than a globe?

Answer) Maps are more useful than a globe as they provide us with a lot of information about the earth. Maps can be used to show finer details of the earth including its physical features such as mountains, plains, rivers, oceans, etc., and the political divisions of the earth like countries, states, cities, villages, etc.

(e) Distinguish between a map and a plan.

Answer) Map :- A map is a visual representation of an area—a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions, and themes.

Plan :- Plans are a set of two-dimensional diagrams or drawings used to describe a place or an object, or to communicate building or fabrication instructions.

(1) Which map provides detailed information? How do symbols help in reading maps?

Answer) The map which provides detailed information is the large-scale map.

Symbols represent roads, bridges, trees, railway lines, etc. through certain letters, shades, colours, pictures and lines. In this way, symbols are a convenient means of reading a map.
