1 - Butanol does not show optical isomerism but 2 - Butanol does .

  • Optical activity is shown by a compound when a chiral carbon is present in the compound .
  • In 1 - Butanol , no chiral carbon is present in it .
  • In 2 - Butanol , 2nd carbon is chiral carbon as all the four bonds are formed with four different species . Thus , it shows optical activity and optical isomerism .
