In grammar there are two types of speeches:-

Direct Speech:-

The words spoken directly by the speaker without making any changes are known as direct speech.

Eg:- She said, "I need to go to market today."

Rules for direct speech:-

  • The reported speech and the principal verb of a direct speech is separated by a comma.
  • The words spoken by the speaker is enclosed withing double inverted commas (" ").
  • The first letter under the double inverted comma is always capital.

Indirect speech:-

The act of reporting a speech by making necessary changes to it.

Eg:- She said that she need to go to market today.

Rules for indirect speech:-

  • The comma separating the reported speech and the pricipal verb is removed.
  • The double inverted commas are removed.
  • The tense of the reporting verb must not be changed.
  • The indirect speech must be introduced by the characters such as :- that, if, whether, what, about, etc.
  • Any kind of sentences must be converted into an assertive sentence.
  • The other necessary changes like:- verb forms, time, place and expressions must be made.

Exceptions for reported speech:-

The tense of reported speech may not change if the narration is about universal truth, habitual facts or past habitual facts.
