1. Define work. When is work said to be done by a
force ?
2. How is the work done by a force measured when
(i) force is in the direction of displacement, (ii) force
is at an angle to the direction of displacement ?

Answer:

1.)work is defined as the product of force and displacement

work is said to be 1 joule when 1 newton of force is applied on a body to move it by a distance of 1 meter

2.) (i) When the body is displaced along the direction of the force applied the formula for measuring work is

W = F×S

where W = WORK, F = FORCE AND

S = DISPLACEMENT

(ii) When the body is displaced at an angle to the force applied the formula for measuring work is

W = FS×cos A

where A is the angle between force and displacement
