Rani Lakshmibai was born on 19 November 1828 in the town of Varanasi into a Marathi Karhade Brahmin family. She was named Manikarnika Tambe and was nicknamed Manu. Her father was Moropant Tambe and her mother Bhagirathi Sapre (Bhagirathi Bai). Her parents came from Maharashtra .

she spent her childhood in the palace. Brought up in the household of the Peshwa Baji Rao II, she had an unusual upbringing for a Brahman girl. Growing up with the boys in the peshwa's court, she was trained in martial arts and became proficient in sword fighting and riding.

She was married to the king of jhansi  Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, in May 1842 and was afterwards called Lakshmibai (or Laxmibai) in honour of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi and according to the Maharashtrian tradition of women being given a new name after marriage. In September 1851, she gave birth to a boy, later named Damodar Rao, who died four months after birth. then they adopted a child and renamed him damodar rao , but the king unfortunately coundnt take  the date of his son so  he died of grief

   After the death of the Maharaja in November 1853, because Damodar Rao was an adopted son, the British East India Company , applied the Doctrine of Lapse, rejecting Damodar Rao's claim to the throne and annexing the state to its territories.

During the revolt of 1857 she battled with the british for jhansi , with her son tied to her , but unexpectedly The British attacked back and Lakshmibai was grievously wounded.  Upon her death on June 18th 1858, her body was cremated as per her wishes. Three days after the death of Lakshmibai, the British captured the Fort of Gwalior.
