Answer:

1.Answer:

The Birsa movement was significant in two ways:

It forced the colonial government to introduce laws so that the land of the tribals could not easily be taken over by dikus.

It showed once again that the tribal people had the capacity to protest against injustice and express their anger against colonial rule. They did this in their own specific way, inventing their own rituals and symbols of struggle

2.The British stopped the tribal people from living inside forests by introducing some changes in forest laws.

Colonial officials solved this problem by giving jhum cultivators small patches of land in the forests and allowing them to cultivate these on the condition that these who lived in villages would have to provide labour to the Forest Department and look after the forests. The Forest Department established forest villages in many regions to ensure a regular supply of cheap labour.

Birsa Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter who was famous for Munda Rebellion, which was one of the prominent 19th century tribal rebellions in the sub-continent.

The British had adopted a strategy to ensure availability of cheap labour for the Forest Department to cut trees and transport logs.

Explanation:

Birsa Munda Movement

What worried the British officials the was the political goal of a movement called the Birsa to force out money lenders, missionaries,  Hindu landlords, & the govt so as to set up a "Munda Raj" with Birsa as its leader. The movement had identified all these "forces" as the cause of sufferings and Misery of the Mundas. Birsa had died in 1900 from cholera the movement faded away, however, the movt was considered significant many ways.

  • It had forced the colonial govt to "introduce laws" so that the land of the tribal very easily taken could not be taken away by the foreigners (the Europeans & dikus)
  • It had demonstrated that the tribal people were willing  and had the ability to express their rage & fight against injustice of the colonial rule. They did by inventing their own rituals & struggle symbols.
  • The movement also had  inspired a "feeling of nationalism" in the tribal people.

Problem of Resolving Labour Shortagefor the Forest Dept

  • The lives of tribal groups were associated directly with the forest. Changes in forest rules have had a significant influence on tribal culture. The British had extended their control and jurisdiction over all the forests and had declared that the forests were the state's property. Nevertheless, after the British stopped the tribes from entering the forests, they had a problem. The problem of bringing labour for  the Forest Department for cutting trees for making railway sleepers & labour for transporting logs.
  • Colonial officials had come up with a solution. They decided to provide the Jhum farmers with small pieces of land in the forests to cultivate it, provided they had to provide work to the forest department and also take care for the forests. Hence, the forest dept had set up "forest villages" in several regions to make sure they were supplied with cheap labor.
