- The last leaf was written by O Henry, which he describes a few human elements that really touched the reader's heart.
- The human elements are-
- Friendship- The relationship between Sue and Johnsy, describes that a "friend in need is a friend in deed". When Johnsy fall ill, Sue selflessly helped her and took care of her. There was a true bond between them.
- Sacrifice - Behrman’s true masterpiece ends up being his selfless sacrifice to help Johnsy survive and get better. Similarly, Johnsy sacrifices herself by relying on the last leaf, Old Behram drew his masterpiece and sacrifice himself for young Johnsy.
- Hope- Johnsy loses all hope to achieve her dreams of visiting Italy. But Old Behram gave hope to live by sacrificing himself in the storm. The story portrayed not giving up and a ray of hope.
