Before, finding the answer. Let's find out how we can find the answer.

  • To find the number of students who like English, we must multiply the fraction and the students.
  • To find the number of students who like Maths, we must multiply the fraction and the students.
  • And to find the fraction of total number of students who like to study science, we must write the numerator as the number of students who like science and denominator as the total students.
  • Then, we must simplify it.

Given :

  • Total Students = 40
  • English = 1/5
  • Maths = 2/5
  • Science = rest of them

To find :

  • How many students like to study English?
  • How many students like to study Mathematics?
  • What fraction of the total number of students like to study Science?

Solution :

(i) How many students like to study English?

\sf English = \dfrac{1}{5} \times 40

           \sf = \dfrac{40}{5}

           \sf = 8

Therefore, 8 students like to study English.

(ii) How many students like to study Mathematics?

\sf Maths = \dfrac{2}{5} \times 40

          \sf = \dfrac{80}{5}

          \sf = 16

Therefore, 16 students like to study Mathematics.

(iii) What fraction of the total number of students like to study Science?

Science = Total Students - (English + Maths)

              = 40 - (8 + 16)

              = 40 - 24

              = 16

\sf Fraction = \dfrac{16 }{40 }

            \sf  = \dfrac{16 \div 4 }{40 \div 4}

            \sf = \dfrac{4 \div 2 }{10 \div 2}

            \sf = \dfrac{2}{5}

Therefore, the fraction of the total number of students like to study Science \sf is \: \dfrac{2}{5}.
