1. Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling point whereas covalent compounds have low melting and boiling point. Justify.
2. What are the types of covalent bond? Give an example for each.
3. Identify the polar covalent compounds from the following

1. Ionic compounds have their constituent elements or groups of elements in the form of positive and negative ions.  The electrostatic attraction is very strong.  So the ions are attracted to each other. The cohesive forces among the ions is higher than in the covalently bonded compounds.   In covalently bonded compounds, the molecules are neutral.  The elements and groups inside the molecule are closer to each other.  So there are very less attraction forces among different molecules.

2. polar covalent bond.  There is some ionic nature in the constituents of the molecule.  The electrons in the bond are not equally shared between the two atoms.  They are present for more time with the atoms with more electronegativity.

covalent covalent bond.  The electrons in the bond are closely shared by both atoms in the bond.

3.  polar:  H Cl        and  NH3.  due to high electronegativity of Cl and N.
         and electropositivity of H.

1. Ionic compounds have high melting point than covalent compound because Ionic bond is much stronger than covalent bonds , So for breaking the bond we require more energy as compared to covalent bonds .

2. There are fivetypes of covalent bond depending upon the number of shared electron pairs :-

• Single covalent bond :-

single covalent bond is formed by sharing of one electron pair between two atoms .
e.g. HCl

• Double covalent bond :-

It is formed by sharing of 2 electron pairs between two atoms.

• Polar covalent bond :-

A covalent bond formed between two different atoms is known as Polar covalent bond .

e.g. HF

• Triple covalent bond :-

It is formed by sharing of 3 electron pairs.

e.g. N2

• Non-polar covalent bond :-
A covalent bond formed between two like atoms is known as Non-polar bond.

e.g. H-H
