• Kerala is often said to be the 'State of canals' as many canals are built in the state to control the flow of water.
• Due to the presence of the Western Ghats, a large water flow of West flowing rivers passed through the state of Kerala.

• Generally, a hand boat is used to travel over the surface of the water which is also a primary occupation of the fishermen living near the shore.
• However, nowadays a ferry which is a motorized boat is used to transport people across the river. Depending on the size of the ferry, it can carry a large number of people at once.
• The Tanga and Jugaad are used to transport people or even goods on the road.
• A small boat can carry a few people whereas a ferry boat carries a large number of people.
• Travelling through these ferry boats is an attraction and people love to experience it hence it also contributes to the tourism industry of the state.
