Positive degree:No other/very few people in the world are as industrious as Japanese . Superlative degree: Japanese are the most industrious people in the world. Comparative degree: Japanese are more industrious than any other people in the world.

Very. And there is a lot of social pressure to be industrious. I'll speak from a large corporate standpoint, as I was a global intern at Toshiba near Yokohama last year.

We're talking bells in the morning, a bell signaling the start and end of lunch break, and a bell for the end of the day. You're seated at your desk before the first bell, only out of the office between the lunch bells, and you can leave after the last bell but not if your direct higher-up hasn't left yet.

Beyond a rigorous and structured work schedule, most Japanese work overtime without getting paid to do so. This arises out of an instilled culture of duty and precision. There are little chances for vacation throughout the year. There is also a huge stigma against switching jobs because of the concept of loyalty. Most large businesses will be tentative to hire someone who worked elsewhere and left, because he was 'not loyal' to that company.

I also made friends with some students my age while I was there (undergraduates at Tokyo U). Even at the most prestigious university in Japan, most students don't take their classes seriously, because college, for them, is the only time they can really enjoy themselves and have fun without restriction. Schooling up until college entrance exams is extremely competitive, rigorous, and tough. Then, post-graduation, you're most likely to be locked into a job which will occupy the greater part of your day, whether you enjoy it or not.
