The Ganga Action Plan is an ambitious project launched in 1984 the then prime Minister of India, Rajeev gandhi with the basic objective of improving the water quality of Ganges River, removing pollutants, diverting sewage waste away from the river as well as chemical/industrial waste.
Since the river provides livelihood to over 40% of India serving almost 500 million people (more than any other river in the world).
However, the overall the project as mostly failed to deliver tangible results at the same time, costing the tax payer millions of dollars.
Since the Narenda Modi government took over in 2014, the government has already spent more than 3,000 crore on the project in the last 3 years.

Over $4 billion has said to be allocated for the project between 2010 and 2020 but the latest 5 year budget announced in 2015 for 2015-2020 was 20,000 crore
