Grievances among the soldiers had been brewing for some time. Some of them were :

◾️No Indian could rise above a subedar.

◾️Indian soldiers were not given batta or foreign travel allowance.

◾️ Soldiers had to cross the seas which they considered polluting.

◾️ There was a rumour that the Enfield rifles used by the spouse were greased with pig and cow's fat. This upset the sentiments of both the Hindus and the Muslims
