adolescence begins after the thirteenth year and continues through the teenage years. the beginning of adolescence is called puberty. during puberty:

•the sex organs develop rapidly.

•menstruation begins in girls.

•production of sperm begins in boys.

•a growth spurt also occurs. in females, the rapid growth occurs between the age of 10 to 16. during these years, females may grow about 15 centimeters in height and gain about 16 kilograms or more weight.

•in males, the growth spurt occurs between the age of 11 to 17 years. during this time,males may grow about 20 cm and gain about 20 kilograms or more weight.
