Crime against women has been on increase. It has existed in the past in almost all countries, regions, cultures and communities. The crime has much to do with the existing low status of women prevalent in our society. The violence is at various levels. It is at physical, mental, emotional, domestic and public. They are the most oppressed, subjugated section of society. Though various measures at education, economic independence have been taken but they are far from improving their status which directly or indirectly help at increasing crime against women.

If we look back historically, the status of women during Veda period was good. They were equal to men and had high esteem in society. But subsequently their position in society deteriorated. They began to be treated like animals, often beaten by husbands. Women were deprived from getting education. Their activities were limited to household chores and help in reproduction. A girl child born was considered to be curse in society. Husband was theirParmeswar. They had no independent existence. Their existence lay in association with men as wife, sister or mother. She was thought to be a burden as dowry was to be given. Dowry system is still rampant in our society. Widows were looked down upon. System of sati was prevalent which even snatched the right to live. They had to die with their husbands on the funeral pyre.

The vast majority of crimes against women go unnoticed and unreported. There is no proper data on crimes against women and information on the subject are conflicting. The fear of social stigma and the uncertainty of getting justice are the main reasons why most of the crimes against women go unreported.

Crime against women have created a poor image of India among foreign countries. Millions of foreign tourists visit India every year and this has directly affected the tourism industry. It is a matter of great shame that when our country is marching towards prosperity and advancement, the barbaric acts against women are on the rise.

Our fundamental duties under Article 51A of the Constitution also include the provision that it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women. However, crimes against women are increasing. Stringent measures need to be taken to curb this and safeguard women. The government, the law enforcement agencies and the general public must unite to put an end to violence against women.

The Government must form special police cells with women officers and other police personnel to receive reports about crime against women and take severe actions against the culprits.

The Government must also pass and implement more strict laws than the existing ones for the safety of women. There is an urgent need to impart and inculcate moral values to the police. We must streamline the police and prosecuting agencies.

The women victims must come out courageously against any crime against them. They must take a strong stand so that in future no other woman has to go through the same traumatic experience.

Our political leaders, irrespective of their party affiliations should show political will and conviction to deal severely with those guilty of crimes against women.

More women need to be recruited into our police forces.
