1. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was one of the country's freedom fighters who believed that only a

2. Savarkar was born on 28 May, 1883, in Nasik. While studying at Pune's
Fergusson College, he and a few hostelites formed 'Abhinav Bharat', an

organisation whose aim was to set India free. Savarkar studied law in

London, where he started the 'Free India Society. He was suspected of
having a hand in the killing of Sir Wyllie and was warned that he would
get his law degree only if he gave a written agreeement that he would
give up his political activities. He refused.
3. While in London, Savarkar wrote The First War of Independence about the 1857 Revolt. It was
confiscated by the government even before it could get published. In 1910, Savarkar was arrested in
the Nasik Conspiracy Case, when the British Collector of Nasik, Mr. Jackson was shot dead. Savarkar
was taken by ship to India for trial. The ship's first port of call was marseilles, and as they were nearing
the place, Savarkar jumped through the ship's porthole and swam to the shore. He was caught and

sent to Bombay where he was tried for sedition in 1910.
4. Savarkar was sentenced to 50 years of rigorous imprisonment at the Cellular Jail in the Andamans.
5. After India became free, he served as president of the Hindu Mahasabha. He wrote several essays, lo
poems, plays, novels and even his autobiography. He died on 26 February, 1966, at the age of 83.
