However, clear, lucid writing, which is a pleasure to read, does not come easily. It
requires care practice and hard work. One of the main reasons we find writing difficult is
that we expect our very first draft to produce a finished piece. This is rarely so. As a
matter of fact, good writing always requires many drafts that are worked upon and
thrown away before the final piece emerges. So the first rule of good writing is to learn to
revise and edit one`s work many times before we ‘submit’ it.
When you have to write something the best way to begin is simply by sitting down at
your desk with pen and paper and writing non-stop for at least ten minutes. Write
whatever comes to your mind without bothering about language, spelling, grammar or
neatness. Let your ideas flow. The first draft is only meant to generate ideas and the
mistakes you make in writing can be corrected later. When the ten minutes are over, read
what you have written, finding fault with the ideas, the argument, the examples you have
chosen to illustrate your ideas with, in fact with everything that you have written. Put yourself in the position of the reader and criticize what you have written, asking yourself
if it is clear, convincing and interesting
