NAMELESS IN NILAMBUR
1.
Oh, to go without a name for 15 years. Number 1, you've become too fat, Number 2, did you get
that? Number 3, bring home the goat Number 4 Bet on that boat.
2 Sounds funny? Maybe to you. But for members of the Chola Naicken community, this is the
way it is. No name is the game here
3 There's a clearing and some caves suddenly appear on the horizon as the Nilambur forests
in Kerala taper off at a point. The Naickens like to remain faceless,
They make it difficult for outsiders to intrude. To meet them one has to trudge 25km into
the jungles, crossing gushing rivulets and dodging elephant herds, and sometimes pythons
curled on the branches of droopy trees.
5.
They live so far away from what we call civilization that they are almost elusive. There is an
entire tribe at Myladumpetti. They are of Negroid stock, dark and stout, and they live in
caves. Still
6. "There are about 200 caves We live in them. When someone dies, we leave the cave for a
fresh one. We return only after a year. This is because the caves are haunted for 12 months
by souls of the dead." says 75-year-old Chathan the tribe's chief)
A few years ago, the Kerala government did attempt to "civilize" them, but failed
8. "They constructed house for us. But we didn't like them," says Chathan, almost with a
smirk. The empty modern dwelling meant for the tribe were later pulled down by
elephants
9. The Government officials were surprised at the caves. They were even more surprised by
the nameless children
10.
Chathan's grandsons too don't have a name. "We don't name them till they attain the age
of 15," the chief explains.
11. "Then, God comes and offers a name in the dream of the child's father." But what if God
does not come and neither does the dream? "That never happens," he says angrily.
12. "He always comes. It could be late sometimes, but the dream does happens."
13 The tribe has devised some way of redressing the problem. Not that it is foolproof.
"Till the children get a name, we just call them mone (son) or mole (daughter)," Chathan
signs off. There are some difficulties at times though. Like when there are four sons in a
family and everyone is called mone.
15. The children don't seem to mind either. What's in a name they ask. Nothing.
