1. Riya was playing with pencils. Suddenly she dipped one pencil into a glass tumbler filled with water and observed immersed portion of the pencil bends.
(i) Name the optical phenomenon involved in above observation and explain it briefly,
(ii) Draw a ray diagram for the above case.​

i ) The pehnomenon causing the image of the pencil to bend is known as refraction.

Explanation:

the change of direction of light when it passes frombone medium to another obliquely is called refraction.Here the image of pencil is in air ,a optically rarer medium whereas the lower part is in the water a optically denser medium causing the change in speed of light and changing the direction of image slightly making the pencil look bent.
