ans) A tarn is a form of lake but it is usually much smaller and often found in a mountainous region, but not necessarily as there are lowland tarns too. But at what point the surface area of a tarn is sufficiently large to make it a lake is a bit like asking when a stream becomes a river or when a hill becomes a mountain. People have tried to draw up distinctions between each but at the end of the day it tends to be a subjective matter. However, going back to the tarn/lake distinction, if you take the English Lake District as an example, while there are a few “grey areas” where the smallest lake and largest tarn are similar sizes, you will find that the vast majority of the lakes are considerably larger than the tarns.
