Divide the equation by cos^2a on both the sides
then we get,
sec^2a +tan^2a=3tan a
(since,sec^2a=1 +tan^2a)
1+tan^2a +tan^2a=3tan a
2tan^2a -3tan a + 1 = 0
On solving the equation above
we get,
tan a = 1 or 1/2
then we get,
sec^2a +tan^2a=3tan a
(since,sec^2a=1 +tan^2a)
1+tan^2a +tan^2a=3tan a
2tan^2a -3tan a + 1 = 0
On solving the equation above
we get,
tan a = 1 or 1/2
