1. Most plastics used today are man-made, known as synthetic. The main source of synthetic plastic is crude oil, although coal and natural gas are also used.
2. There are two main types of plastics and these are named Thermoplastics and Thermosetting Plastics. Thermoplastics are made up of lines of molecules with few cross linkages. This allows them to soften when heated and to be bent into a variety of shapes and forms.
3. Plastic waste is one of many types of wastes that take too long to decompose. Normally, plastic items take up to 1000 years to decompose in landfills. But plastic bags we use in our everyday life take 10-20 years to decompose, while plastic bottles take 450 years.
Thus, plastic does not decompose when exposed to air...but only when stuffed into the ground.
