To find : the distance between tops of two poles .

Given : height of pole AB = 8 m

           height of pole CD = 13\ m

           distance between poles = 12 \ m

Solution :

  • From the given data we conclude that :

       height of pole CD = height of pole AB + 5 \ m

                                      = ( 8 + 5 )\ m

  • Therefore ,triangle is formed at the top of two poles with base as 12 \ m and adjacent side as 5 \ m making right angle .
  • Applying pythagoras theorem to the triangle we can find the distance between their tops.

                =\sqrt{(5)^{2}+(12)^{2}}

              =\sqrt{25}+144=\sqrt{169}=13

Hence, distance between the top of two poles is 13 \ m.
