In order to add two fractions with different denominators, one or all denominator must convert (be the same).

Two methods:

  • Take the denominators and multiply them together, ie 2 x 4 = 8.

The numbers will change ,but the faction will be the same 1/2 = 4/8 and 1/4 = 2/8.

Now you can add : 4/8 + 2/8 = 6/8 which is equal to 3/4.

By observing the problem 1/2 is equal to 2/4. You now have both fractions with the same denominator.

Now add: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
