1) Characteristics of Third Generation of Computer:

  • Use of Integrated Circuits (IC) instead of transistors

  • Use of Semi-conductor memory

Small size than previous generation computers

  • Use of magnetic storage devices.

  • Improved faster operations and more dependable output. Use of mini computers

  • Use of monitors and line printers

  • Use of high level programming languages

  • Less expensive than 2nd generation computers

  • Less expensive maintenance cost.

  • Examples: IBM 360, IBM 370, PDP-11 etc....

2)first generation computers include ENIAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC, IBM-701, and IBM-650. These computers were large and very unreliable. They would heat up and frequently shut down and could only be used for very basic computations.

3) supercomputer is a computer with a high level of performance compared to a general-purpose computer. The performance of a supercomputer is commonly measured in floating-point operations per second instead of million instructions per second.
