(1) Acids are those compounds which when dissolved in water produces Hydronium ions. Example - HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, etc.

(2) Bases are those compounds which when dissolved in water produces Hydroxyl ions. Example - NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH)2, etc.
