  1. The most significant uses of coal are in electricity generation, steel production, cement manufacturing and as a liquid fuel. Different types of coal have different uses. Steam coal - also known as thermal coal - is mainly used in power generation.
  2. Coal tar is a thick dark liquid which is a by-product of the production of coke and coal gas from coal. It has both medical and industrial uses. Medicinally it is a topical medication applied to skin to treat psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff). It may be used in combination with ultraviolet light therapy.
  3. Due to high pressure and temperature and the absence of air, the wood of the buried forest plants and trees slowly got converted into coal. The slow process by which the dead plants buried under the Earth have become coal is called as carbonisation.
