a) Compact settlement are closely knitted settlements with facilities like shops,hospitals,banks,etc close to the houses. It is like a town but a smaller scale.

b) Scattered Settlement are those having few isolated houses. Such settlements are found in hilly areas,deserts and forests. There is lack of resources in these settlements.

c) A linear settlement is a form of settlement where buildings are built along the river, a coastline or a road.

d) Radical settlement are those where streets develop in every direction around a common point and give it a star - like appearance.

e) The settlements in which houses are constructed in a circular shape is known as circular pattern. Such kind of settlements is found around lakes, tanks,or a planned village.

Rural settlement are small with less population and few amenities. Traditionally, they included only villages where people mainly associated with agriculture. Rural settlement are found in different patterns based on the way the houses are built in them.

COMPACT SETTLEMENT :-

In compact settlements, houses are built close to each other with narrow streets. Such settlements develop mostly in the river valleys and fertile plains where the land is flat.

SCATTERED SETTLEMENT :-

In scattered settlements, houses or individual farmhouses are scattered and located away from each other. They develop mostly in plateaus, forests or hilly areas.

LINEAR SETTLEMENT :-

In linear settlements, houses are built in a straight line next to a straight road, river, coast, canal, or a railway track.

RADIAL SETTLEMENTS :-

In radial settlements, streets spread out in all directions from a common point with houses along them giving a star-like apperance.

CIRCULAR SETTLEMENT :-

In circular settlements, houses are built in a circular pattern around a lake or a pound or an oasis. These areas have scare water.
