The British granted Ceylon independence in 1948. The Sinhalese majority immediately began to pass laws that discriminated against Tamils, particularly the Indian Tamils brought to the island by the British. They made Sinhalese the official language, driving Tamils out of the civil service.

2.The demands made by the Sri Lankan Tamils were as follows:

To recognise Tamil language as an official language.

Regional autonomy

Equality of opportunities in securing education and jobs.

An independent state – Tamil Eelam – in northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka.

3.Vertical division of power refers to sharing of power among different levels of the government - union, state and local government. In this division of power, the local government will work under the union or the state government and the state government will work under the union government.

4.Horizontal power sharing is commonly known as check and balance. In fact, the power is derived equally and thus optimize with executive legislature and judiciary. Moreover, they work independently and have equal rights to check each power. It is known as system of check and balance by taking among organs of government.

5.The king is the head as well as the prime minister of the state in Belgium. It forms a federal, democratic and constitutional monarchy. People belonging to one language community such as French, German and Dutch irrespective of where they live elects the community government in Belgium.
