Answer:

Which of the following increases friction?

(a) Lubricant

(b) Treads on a tyre

(c) Streamlining

(d) Polishing

Answer:- Treads on tyre

DEFINITION:-

Now let us understand what these terms actually mean.

(a) Lubricants- Certain substances which are used to reduce friction between two surfaces of contact are known as lubricants. For ex-

1) Talcum powder is sprinkled on carrom boards to reduce friction.

2) Grease is applied on the chains of bicycles.

(b) Treads- The pattern of raised lines on the surface of a tyre is known as a tread. This helps to increase friction between the surface of the tyres of a car and the road. This prevents the car from skidding.

(c) Streamlined- streamlined bodies are those bodies which can easily swim through a fluid. In nature, we can notice that fishes have a streamlined shape. Even aeroplanes and race cars are given a streamlined shape to reduce the effect of fluid friction on them.

(d) Polishing- Polishing helps in reducing the irregularities present on a surface. We know that if the irregularities on a surface are less, then the friction will also be less.

Hope it helps
