During the 7th century , the kings appointed subordinates under them which were known as Samantas. This name was given to mainly warrior chiefs or big landlords in the different parts of the Indian subcontinent. Samantas were supposed to be present in the court and even showers gifts to their overlords or kings. They also provided military support to their kings or overlords.
Samantas were considered feudal lords who were vested with authority over a portion of a kingdom. The king authorized them to collect revenue as well as maintain law and order within a designated area of his kingdom as a result the king`s soon lost his central authority over his kingdom. The Samantas soon became a powerful figure in front of the common people. One such example is the kingdom of Harshavardhana which lost its central control in front of the Samantas.

Brahmadeya was the title of land gifted to single Brahmins or to several Brahmin families either in the form of a plot or entire village during the medieval India. It was a initiative carried out by the ruling king which was followed by the merchants, chiefs, etc.
Brahmadeya helped the emperor to garner ideological support and expansion of agricultural activities as well as establishment of urban settlements. Brahamdeya at times played a negative role by depriving the farmer of its land rights which led to social tension as well as clashes between farmers, brahmans and the kings resulting into deaths. Brahmadeyas were concentrated near lakes or tanks. The donated land were well marked and demarcated.
