Answer:

1.Mendel carried out crosses with two traits to see the interaction and basis of inheritance between them. He carried out dihibrid crosses to study two traits. ... Also, traits segregate i.e. separate during the formation of gametes and gave law of segregation

1.Mendel carry out an experiment to study inheritance of two traits in garden pea because traits are easily observable, life cycle is short, large number of offsprings and cross pollination was easy.

2. All progeny formed are phenotypically dominant but having heterozygous genotype.

3. The ratio of both genotype and phenotype obtained is 3:1

F1 genertaion is monohybrid

F2 generation is monohybrid.

Explanation:

1). Mendel chose pea plant to study the inheritance of two traits because the traits obtained were easily observable, large number of progeny were formed and life cycle was short. Due to these traits the cross pollination became quite easy.

The results of cross between two contrasting characters were seen in a short time which makes it easy to study the pea plant for two traits.

2). In F1 generation he found all flowers as purple when cross between two traits of flower colour. One homozygous purple (dominant) crossed with one recessive homozygous white flower.

PP  X pp

Pp Pp Pp Pp

All progeny is purple (heterozygous)

In F2 generation he found ratio of 3:1 ie 3 purple and one white

    P      p

P  PP    Pp

p  Pp     pp    3:1 both phenotype and genotype ratio is same.

The monohybrid cross is a result of cross between a dominant and recessive allele resulting in heterozygous trait. Therefore f1 generation is monohybrid cross. In monohybrid cross one trait is studied as in the pea plants.

The F2 generation is the cross of heterozygous traits having a contrasting character hence it is also monohybrid because only one character is involved.
