Because of different tribes, races, religions and cultures who live together in harmony not seen any where else in Africa or maybe this earth. See my answer Is Tribalism more prevalent in West Africa than Southern and East African states?
There are 9 African languages among blacks meaning tribes. There are also Indians, Whites, mixed breeds and foreign nationals. Among these are gays, muslims and jews who also live in harmony. South Africa is a violent country but its never about what language you speak or color of your skin but what you have.

Hey there !
it is called a rainbow nation becoz people of different castes, races , religion live there..first the people in south africa were discriminated on tha basis of there colour so when they drew up he constitution they gave all the blacks, whites n coloured rights. therefore due to this diversity it is called as rainbow nation.
Hope it helps you !
