On the Indian side there was a realisation that to better the prospects of the common masses empowering them is the only way forward and Democracy is the right vehicle. Princely states would have accumulated power in the hands of few and we would have reversed to the situation prior to 1857. One cannot also ignore the politicians at the time of India's freedom had selfish interests to grab the power and be the new lords. At least that's how India has shaped out. For majority of the years one party ruled India which also turned out to be the one that created a whole culture of corruption, massive corruption that has resulted in a completely rotten system that breeds maggots.

So the objective was lofty but India is still waiting for efficiency and able governance.
