1) The poet calls the snake one of the 'lords of life' bcoz the snake has emerged from the burning bowels of the earth. The poet wants to convey that the bottom of the earth where the snake was forced to live in exile was burning like hell.
2) The poet calls his sin as pettiness because he has done a vulgar act of throwing a log at snake.He consider his act as a low act. He is guilt ridden and feels that he has to atone for the manners of his action of throwing a log at the snake.
