What caused the poets horror towards the snake ?

The poet's horror towards the snake was caused by the voices of human education which told him that the black snakes in Sicily are harmless but the golden ones are venomous. The poet was very afraid to see the golden snake drinking water from his water-trough but at the same time he felt honoured that the snake sought his hospitality.
