1)Why is the ionisation enthalpy of group 15 elements
greater than those of corresponding group 16

2)What is the order of stability, basic character, bond
angle and reducing power of NH3, PH3, AsH 3, SbHz
and BiH3

3) Why does nitrogen show anomalous behaviour ?

4) Why is N, less reactive?

Answer:

Due to half filled P orbital of group 15 elements so there is loss of stability for them to lose electrons i.e I.E of 15>16

Answer:

  1. because extra stable half filled P orbital electronic configurations of group 15 elements larger amount of energy is require to remove electrons compared to group 16 elements.
  2. BiH3< SbH3< AsH3 < PH3< NH3
  3. due to its small size of its atom and ion and hai charge/size ratio
  4. the ionization energy decreases and tendency to oxides increases thus, N is less reactive.
