All the three witches in the Act 1 Scene 1 of "Macbeth" ended their conversation by saying:
" Fair is foul, and foul is fair
Hover through the fog and filthy air"
The above statement is a paradoxical statement. A paradox is a statement which has contradictory meaning in itself but has some hidden truth in itself. The witches said that the "fair" which indicates the reality or authenticity is very different. Appearances deceive reality. The thing which appears much clear and trustworthy are the most impure and corrupted. Likewise, the things which are unclear or "foul" are in reality much clearer.
