Of all the planets in the solar system other than the Earth, five can be seen by the naked eye.

Those planets have been known to astronomers for thousands of years. Uranus was

discovered in 1781. Then , in 1846, John Couch Adams discovered Neptune. Pluto was

discovered in 1930. The name Pluto was chosen by Venetia Burney, an 11-year old British

school girl. Pluto is smaller in size than all other planets, in fact it is smaller than the Earth’s

moon. So, it is no longer considered a proper planet. Pluto’s planetary status was taken away

in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union. More recently it has been conjectured that

Pluto originated somewhere outside the solar system and got caught in the Sun’s gravity
