Answer:

The ratio is 25: 7

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the present age of the son and y be the present age of the mother

One year ago, the age of the son was x - 1 and

One year ago, the age of the mother was y - 1

1 year ago, the mother was 4 times older than her son, therefore

y - 1 = 4(x - 1)

y = 4x - 4 + 1

y = 4x - 3 → (1)

After 6 years, son's age = x + 6 and mother's age = y + 6

After 6 years mother's age becomes 5 years more than double of her son's age, therefore

y + 6 = 2(x + 6) + 5

y = 2x + 12 + 5 - 6

y = 2x + 11 → (2)

Substracting the above equations (1) and (2)

2x - 14 = 0

2x = 14

x = 7

Therefore the present age of the son is 7 years

Put x = 7 in equation (1), we get

y = 4(7) - 3

y = 25 which is the present age of mother

Hence the present ratio of mother's age to son's age is 25: 7
