Answer:
Asterix and Obelix (not forgetting Dogmatix and that little village we all know so well) is positively the best thing ever to come out of France. The English translation is very witty, and as notes, appeals to people across the age spectrum. If one had a typical classical British secondary education, then the references to poets, painters and Romans just added to the already excellent humour. It’s also educational; even as a kid, I’d want to look things up to see what bits I was missing or expand my knowledge about some facet or another. A bit like the books and TV programmes, A&O encourage curiosity and investigation. Plus, the stories are always upbeat, with even the Romans coming across as relatable characters. On a personal note, it’s nice to see a sympathetic portrayal of somebody who’s almost as musically challenged as I am. So, well done Bell and Hockridge (oh, and Goscinny and Uderzo, I suppose)
