Newton’s first law of motion states that “An object at rest stays at rest, an object in motion stays in motion with same speed and direction unless acted by a force”. Some of the applications of this law are :

(i) Consider the use of seat belts in a car. When the car takes a bend or curve, if not for seat belts, we would get thrown away from the car. So seat belts provide a balanced force to make us stable.

(ii) When the bus or train accelerates, we tend to 'fall backward'. This is because we resist the change by falling back thus maintaining the law of inertia.
