a. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
b. All things are yellow to the jaundice eye.
c. Necessity is the mother of invention
d. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today
Answers
a. A rolling stone gathers no moss- Usually, moss starts growing all over a stone that is lying in one place. However, a stone that is continuously rolling is free from moss. Similarly, a person who is forever on the move or has too much change in his life, cannot really settle down or earn a reputation. He has nothing solid to build on. On the other hand, such a person is also not burdened with responsibilities that settled people are usually stuck with, like for example home mortgages.
b. All things are yellow to the jaundice eye- Jaundice is an illness during which the eyes become pale yellowish. People believed that those suffering from jaundice saw everything yellow. So, the proverb means that people with a prejudice will always look at everything from a biased perspective, and not in a fair manner. (The Hindi equivalent of this proverb is सावन के अंधे को सब हरा दिखता है I)
c. Necessity is the mother of invention- Whenever one is faced with a problem, solving which is necessary, the individual invents a solution. So, new inventions are usually made and new ideas are usually generated when finding a solution becomes necessary. (The Hindi equivalent of this proverb is आवश्यकता अविष्कार की जननी है I)
d. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today- If there is a task that can be handled, it should be taken care of. It is not wise to delay things and postpone them to the next day. (The Hindi equivalent of this proverb is काल करे सो आज कर , आज करे सो अब I)
