*They are the site of aerobic respiration in the cell.

*They oxidise fats and carbohydrates to release energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecules.

*It is also called the energy currency of the cell.

*The main job of mitochondria is to perform cellular respiration and to regulate cellular metabolism.

*This means it takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks it down, and turns it into energy.

*This energy is then in turn used by the cell to carry out various functions.

Each cell contains a different number of mitochondria. The number present is dependent upon how much energy the cell requires.

*The more energy a cell needs the more mitochondria will be present there.

Cells have the ability to produce more mitochondria as needed.

They also can combine mitochondria to make larger ones.

it produces ATP(adenosine triphosphate) thats why it is the power house of the cell.
they play an important role in metabolism and synthesise other certain substances in the body
they are rod shaped
they are present in both animal and plant cell
it has its own dna
they have own machinary for synthesising proteins
they reproduce by the process of fission like bacteria
it is believed that they originate from bacteria by endo symbiosis
it also helps in the building of certain parts of blood like hormones like testosterone and estrogen
