10. imagine we have a spring and we don't know its elastic constant. to know which it is we hang an object with a mass of 2,5 kg and its elongation is 15 cm.
a) Calculate the elastic constant.
b) Once we have taken the object off, calculate the force we have to do to enlarge it 5 cm.
c) The elongation of the spring if we do a force of 50 N.
d) Which would be the previous answers if we split the spring in two pieces and do the same
with both of them as in a),b) c)? Why?

Answer:

The elastic constants are defined as the second derivative of the Gibbs free energy with respect to strain (Nye, 1985), i.e. which can be calculated at constant temperature (isothermal, X = T) or constant entropy (adiabatic, X = S).
