The way you give up the dream is actually the same way you realize the dream: by going after it. If the idea is really stuck in your head and heart, it will be very difficult to give it up without having at least measured yourself against the task and seen where you fell.

Tennis is an interesting game in that at any given level it's quite difficult to distinguish the differences between players more than a level or two above you. So for the average club player, it is almost impossible to see the technical differences between a solid Division 1 college player (NTRP 5.5), and a Challenger Circuit regular (NTRP 6.0-6.5), even though an elite player would have an easier time distinguishing. So until you get to a certain level, you won't know how much better than you other players are. Inherently, tournament tennis tends to sort out the participants as they play more.

If you start doing the things that serious players do, you will start to find out how far (or close) you are from your dream. So, as Augusto Baena Reig said, a good strategy would be to hire a coach, and start training and drilling every day you can. Then start entering some local and regional tournaments. If you win some matches, that's great. If you lose, that's also great, because you now know where you stand. A close match won't tell you that much unless it's against a world class player, but a thorough beating by an average player may. At the very least, you'll have some fun and play some tennis. And along the way, you may get a more accurate idea of where you stand with respect to other players and the pro game. And once you do this, you will know in your heart if the dream is impossible, and be happy just to play this great game for the fun of it.

I HOPE IT WILL HELP YOU
